Edit with AI

Select text and choose Edit with AI, or press Shift + A. An edit box opens in the document, with the current text above and the new text below. Ask for changes in plain words, select part of the new text to change only that part, use "Add a citation" to pull a reference from your Fieldnote libraries, or type a correction yourself. Done applies it as one change that everyone sees, and one Undo reverses it. Co-authors watch your edit box live; if two people edit the same text, each can take the other's version, and Done asks which to keep. Needs an AI link.

Edit with AI, in more detail

  • Shared with co-authors. Co-authors see the live edit box. If you both edit the same text, each of you can take the other's version.
  • Edit just part of it. Select text inside the new-text box and the Edit with AI pill appears again; click it or press Shift+A. That part is tagged "editing this part" and the rest fades.
  • Steps you can turn off. Each change is a chip. Click to switch a step off or on, hover to see what it changed, press × to delete it, and Undo brings it back.
  • Questions and offers. If a request is unclear, the AI asks a question instead of guessing. One click adds a table or a figure after the paragraph.
  • Several boxes at once. Work on more than one paragraph without finishing the first.
  • A spinner while the AI works, in your box and in your co-author's view.

Citations and figures

  • Sort your papers. In Cite, sort by Date, Name or Relevant. Relevant uses AI to rank papers against the paragraph at your cursor. Needs Fieldnote connected; Relevant also needs an AI link.
  • See where a figure came from. The Sources panel shows a Locus figure's revision and whether it is up to date, a Fieldnote figure's paper, or that an uploaded image has no linked source.
  • Clear errors in Insert citation. If it fails, it says why. When Manuscript isn't allowed to read your Fieldnote library, there is an Allow button.

Editing and sharing

  • History in the document. Step through versions with ◀ ▶ or the arrow keys. Changes show in green and red, and Restore and Exit are in the same bar.
  • Page layout in the sidebar. It opens as its own panel on the right. Only one panel is open at a time, and Settings opens over the sidebar.
  • A tidier header. The Ask button is gone, and the header shows who can open the document next to its title.
  • A friendlier Share panel. Avatars for each person, icon actions, and one-click add and switch rows.
  • Indent a paragraph. Tab indents the first line and Shift+Tab removes it. Esc then Tab leaves the editor. The indent is kept in Word, PDF and HTML export.
  • Choose the model on a shared AI plan. If your lab shares an AI plan, pick the model and effort for Manuscript, or choose Use my default.

Fixes

  • Word check boxes keep their ticked or unticked state when you import a file. Email links (mailto:) become plain text, and you get a warning telling you how many.
  • Odd-looking letters (Unicode math italics) are turned into plain letters when you open a document. Undo brings them back.

A margin comment beside a highlighted word

Margin comments

Comment beside the words, reply in the thread and resolve it when it is done. Comments fold away to small circles, and "view all" opens them together.

Reviewing an AI proposal before it applies

Review AI results where they land

The proposal marker now shows the change itself: what is added, removed, moved or edited. For a single paragraph, review the result in place, edit it, or select part of it and choose "Do this". Needs an AI link.

The reference list with the style chooser

Eight citation styles

Chicago, Harvard, IEEE, MLA and AMA join APA 7, Nature and Vancouver. Change the style from the reference list, and every citation follows.

Cropping a figure in place

Crop and resize figures

Drag the frame on the picture, or type exact sizes in the side panel. Each crop is its own Undo step.

AI Ask

  • See your co-authors' proposals. Each marker shows who proposed it and what would change. A count appears on the tab, with a notice when a new one arrives.
  • Tables with labels. Ask for a table, and the AI proposes the row and column labels. Needs an AI link.
  • Choose who interprets your requests. In Advanced settings, "Interpret requests with" switches between Manuscript's built-in assistant and your own AI model.
  • Clearer failures. When a request can't be done, Manuscript says why.

Citations and figures

  • Browse your Fieldnote libraries in Cite. Rolling out Choose a library, see how many papers it has and scroll its papers. Needs Fieldnote connected to Manuscript.
  • Figures from your papers. Rolling out The figure picker has a Fieldnote tab with figures taken from your library's PDFs. Fieldnote prepares them in the background, so a new library may need a few minutes. Charts drawn as vector graphics are not included yet.
  • One click to connect Fieldnote. If Manuscript can't read your Fieldnote library yet, Cite shows an "Allow Manuscript to read Fieldnote" button instead of an empty list.
  • Style chooser in the reference list. Pick the journal style where the references are.

Sharing and setup

  • Find colleagues by name. Share lists your lab colleagues up front, with autocomplete as you type.

Fixes

  • The page indicator reaches the last page, and clicking it jumps there.
  • A tab left open during an update reloads itself instead of showing a broken page.
  • If a tab can't connect, it now tells you why instead of waiting forever.
  • Comment initials and outline fonts display correctly.
